The Belle of Amherst is by William Luce and stars Lindsay Crouse. It was on Broadway and was filmed with Julie Harris. It's a one woman show about the live and poetry of Emily Dickinson. I thought it was extremely well done and quite enjoyable. I don't know much about ED and am not a poetry reader anyway, so this was lots of exposure for me and it really held my interest.
There are only 3 shows left - tonight, Sat night, and Sunday afternoon. It is playing in repertory with Dear Liar by Jerome Kilty which is similar in the sense that it is about correspondence between George Bernard Shaw and Mrs Patrick Campbell. We saw it last week. Next comes A Widow's Blind Date by Israel Horowitz who seems to be more famous these days by being the father of Adrock of the Beastie Boys. This is one of the first times they have not done a brand new play of his.
One of ED's poems -
I'm Nobody! Who Are You
"I'm nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there's a pair of us--don't tell!
They'd banish us, you know.
How dreary to be somebody!
How public, like a frog
To tell your name the livelong day
To an admiring bog!"
